Canada lose 8-1: Alicia Bell saves the day

Wow! So things didn’t work out quite as expected for the Canadian national soccer team last night in Honduras.

Needing only a draw to qualify for the last qualifying round for the chance to qualify for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Canada capitulated in dramatic style, ending up on the wrong end of an 8-1 scoreline.

Seriously, how the hell do you lose 8-1? 8-1?!?!  A team could actually try to lose by that score and struggle to manage it.

The match was hyped up as a do-or-die occasion for Canada.  Who knew that they would take the dying option so literally?

Canada is actually ranked 61st in the world by FIFA, five places above Honduras.  Something tells me the teams will be swapping places when the new rankings are released next month.

Anyway, there isn’t really much I can say to console you all so I won’t even try.  Instead, I’ll let new Blue Toro favourite Alicia Bell cheer you up instead.

Here are a couple of tweets that the Toronto Triumph’s player posted last night:

Don’t you feel better now?  If these are only progress shots, I can’t wait to see what Alicia looks like when she actually reaches her goal!

NFL: The Lonesome Kicker

Well that didn’t work out quite as planned did it?  After reading Manny’s preview yesterday, I was hopeful for the Canadian soccer team heading into their all important match against Panama.

Unfortunately, any hopes of taking a step closer to the final qualifying round for the World Cup finals in 2014 were quickly dashed in a disappointing 2-0 defeat.  However, rather than kick the team when they’re down, I thought it would be fairer to have a go at a more deserving target; Adam Sandler.

Sandler has a lot to answer for.  Don’t get me wrong, he’s starred in some decent comedy sports films, such as Happy Gilmore and the Waterboy.

However, it’s tough to forgive the sacrilege he committed by being involved in the remake of one of my all-time favourite movies; the Longest Yard.  The original was superior in every way, epitomised by one of the best performances I’ve witnessed, with Burt Reynolds in the lead-role as ex-quarterback superstar Paul Crewe.

It was both excruciating and (unintentionally) laughable to watch Sandler attempt to reprise the role. And what makes it worse is there’s a generation of movie-goers out there who think the 2005 version is actually a decent film, partly because they’ve never seen the original.

Fortunately, the opportunity for Sandler to redeem himself comes after I recently discovered one of the funniest music videos’ you’ll watch:

Wimbledon: Milos Raonic in the 2nd round with 20 aces

In his first outing on the grass of Wimbledon since suffering a bad injury last year, Canadian Milos Raonic defeated Colombian Santiago Giraldo in 3 identical sets of 6-4.

Like it is so often the case in England, the rain  put an halt to the great performance of the Canadian, but Milos completed his victory on Wednesday morning.

The young Canuck, who only needed 91 minutes to win this first round dual, registered 20 aces.

Raonic will now meet American Sam Querrey, who surpassed the only other Canadian in the men’s single draw, Vasek Pospisil in 4 sets of 7-5, 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-4.

Pospisil gave a scare to the American when he won the second set tiebreak, but a costly mistake in the third set, to give the break to his opponent, really sunked Pospisil, and he never was the same in that matchup.

It will be the first ever head-to-head between Raonic who currently holds the 22nd rank in the world, and Querrey who is the 64th racquet in the world rankings.

CFL Player // Brad Smith, son of Larry Smith, is Canada’s Bachelor

Bachelor Canada: Citytv announced today that 28-year-old CFL wide receiver Brad Smith is now the country’s most eligible bachelor, and will star as ‘the bachelor’ on The Bachelor Canada. Smith, who grew up in small-town Hudson, QC, graduated from Queen’s University in Kingston, ON, and went on to enjoy a successful career as a wide receiver with the Montreal Alouettes (2007), Toronto Argonauts (2007-2009), and Edmonton Eskimos (2010-2011). Currently a free agent, Smith is taking time off from sports to find true love.

The Canadian looks like he loves the camera and should give a great show if he lets his true personality come out. He’s a very funny guy and I doubt he will be able to hide his feelings for a long period of time. Some girls will find out he is a very direct guy, and that should give us great television.

Even if his CFL career wasn’t exactly stellar, Smith had a great University career with Queen’s. He is one of the rare Canadian born player to make it as a receiver in the CFL, which is an accomplishment on its own.

GSP could be out for the entire year

Initially, when GSP had surgery on his knee to repair some torned ligaments, it was understood that he would fight again in 2012, however the latest news on his rehab aren’t as good.

In deed, the ex world champion was supposed to be back at 100% in July, to then try to conquer his belt back in November. But now, it seems GSP will need more time to recover and it seems he won’t be ready to resume his full contact workout before the end of the summer.

This is obviously not encouraging for the Canadian who hasn’t fought since April, 30th 2011. However, at this stage of his career it is very important that he takes all the time required to recover, so he doesn’t suffer a similar injury, caused by an early comeback
